See the full FAQWhich networks are available in New Zealand?+
One NZ, Spark and 2degrees run the three mobile networks. Your TravelNet plan uses the partner network named in the plan details.
Is there signal on Milford Road and in Fiordland?+
No for most of the route: coverage stops after Te Anau Downs and does not return until Milford Sound, where it is limited. Download maps and cruise tickets in Te Anau.
Is an eSIM practical for a campervan trip?+
Yes. You can share data with a laptop or tablet via hotspot if your phone allows it, and use campsite and fuel apps between towns. Plan offline maps for the South Island passes.
Why is Vodafone New Zealand now called One NZ?+
Vodafone New Zealand changed its name to One NZ in 2023 after leaving the Vodafone brand. It is the same network, so older guides that mention Vodafone NZ refer to One NZ.
Does the New Zealand eSIM work in Australia?+
No, it covers New Zealand only. For both countries, choose the Oceania regional eSIM or add an Australia plan.
Using your New Zealand eSIM
Install the QR code over Wi-Fi before you leave: the 4G/5G plan activates the first time it connects on arrival. The eSIM is data only, so your usual number stays active for WhatsApp, iMessage and calls.
Network coverage
- Cities covered
- Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton and Queenstown
- Rural areas
- Signal depends on the local network: download offline maps before leaving the cities.
- Help
- Support 7 days a week, reply within 12 hours on average. Full refund if not activated, replacement first if faulty.
4G covers towns and the main state highways on both islands, and 5G is available in the larger cities. The South Island has long gaps: Milford Road between Te Anau Downs and Milford Sound, Haast Pass, Arthur's Pass and large parts of the West Coast have little or no signal, as do most Great Walks. On the North Island, the Coromandel interior, East Cape and Tongariro area also have patchy coverage.
