See the full FAQWhich network does an eSIM use in Australia?+
Travel eSIMs roam on Telstra, Optus or Vodafone, depending on the plan; the partner network is listed in the plan details. All three cover the capital cities in 4G and 5G.
Does Australia's 3G shutdown affect my eSIM?+
Mobile data is not affected: the networks now carry data over 4G and 5G. The shutdown matters for voice calls on older phones without VoLTE, which a data eSIM does not use.
Will I have signal in the Outback?+
Coverage follows towns and some highways, but long stretches of the Stuart Highway, the Nullarbor and remote national parks have no mobile signal. Carry offline maps and tell someone your route.
Do I need ID for an Australian SIM?+
Local prepaid SIMs in Australia require identity verification at activation. A travel eSIM bought before departure skips that step and works on arrival.
Is an eSIM useful on a working holiday visa?+
It covers your first weeks while you set up a bank account, a tax file number and housing. For a stay of several months, many working holiday makers then move to a local prepaid plan.
Does the Australia eSIM work in New Zealand?+
No, it covers Australia only. For a trip across both countries, the Oceania regional eSIM or a separate New Zealand plan covers the second leg.
Using your Australia eSIM
Install the QR code over Wi-Fi before you leave: the 4G/5G plan activates the first time it connects on arrival. The eSIM is data only, so your usual number stays active for WhatsApp, iMessage and calls.
Network coverage
- Cities covered
- Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth
- Rural areas
- Signal depends on the local network: download offline maps before leaving the cities.

All three operators switched off their 3G networks between late 2023 and late 2024, so Australian mobile service now runs on 4G and 5G. 5G is available in the state capitals and many regional centres. Most Australians live near the coast, and huge inland areas have no mobile coverage between towns: on the Stuart Highway, the Nullarbor Plain or remote parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, expect hours without signal. Telstra operates the widest geographic network; check which partner network your plan uses before a road trip.
